The Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK) received a donation of HK$10 million from the Co-Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of Shirble Department Store Holdings (China) Limited Mr Yang Xiangbo. Mr Yang's gift will fund the construction of the University’s new academic building – the OUHK Jockey Club Institute of Healthcare.

At a cheque presentation held today (18 April), Chairman of the OUHK Council Mr Michael Wong Yick-kam thanked Mr Yang Xiangbo for his enthusiastic support towards the University. He said his gift would not only enable the OUHK to better its campus facilities, but also bring about profound impact on society as many more healthcare professionals could be trained to address the growing aging population.

Mr Michael Wong added that the HK$10 million gift from Mr Yang is also his first donation made towards the OUHK, and he looked forward to further collaborating with Mr Yang in nurturing more talents for Hong Kong.

As a visionary entrepreneur as well as a philanthropist, Mr Yang Xiangbo is a successful businessman who has contributed immensely to the community and education. In addition to donating to the Harmonia College of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Mr Yang has also made numerous sizable contributions to support a wide range of charitable causes in mainland China. Mr Yang's son, Mr Will Yang Ti-wei, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of Shirble Department Store Holdings (China) Limited, is also a keen supporter of education and has been a member of the OUHK's Sponsorship & Development Fund Committee since 2017.

In the face of challenges brought by an aging population and the growing pressure on healthcare services, the OUHK has embarked on a HK$850-million campus development project on Sheung Shing Street, Ho Man Tin in 2017. The new OUHK Jockey Club Institute of Healthcare will be home to the University’s many and diverse healthcare related programmes that aim to nurture the next generation of healthcare professionals to address community needs. It is expected that about 2,800 students will be benefited from the new learning facility every year upon its completion in 2020. The new Institute will also act as a community health care hub to promote the well-being of the general public.
