The Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK) launched a new academic publication fellowship with a donation of HK$2 million from its Honorary University Fellow cum alumna Katie Shu Sui Pui. Named after Ms Shu’s charitable trust, the fellowship aims to enhance the research culture and academic status of the OUHK by engaging research postgraduate students of the University in the applied research projects conducted by its faculty members.
The “Katie Shu Sui Pui Charitable Trust – Academic Publication Fellowship” is open for application by all current research postgraduate students of the OUHK who take part in applied research projects supervised by the University’s faculty members. A total of HK$100,000 will be granted for each successful full-time MPhil/PhD applicant or HK$70,000 for a part-time MPhil/PhD applicant. Recipients of the Fellowship should conduct research work which leads to publication of quality refereed journal papers under the supervision of OUHK staff within one year.
The new fellowship not only provides financial assistance to research postgraduate students to support their studies, the staff of the OUHK will also in return benefit from the contribution of the recipients to their research.
President of the OUHK Prof. Yuk-Shan Wong expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Ms Katie Shu for her generous contribution in support of the University's development in applied research. He believes that the new initiative will allow the University to attract and nurture more promising researchers and promote applied research for the benefit of Hong Kong society.
Ms Katie Shu received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Language and Translation from the OUHK in 2006 and a Master of Science degree in Hotel and Tourism Management from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2011. Ms Shu was conferred Honorary University Fellowship by the OUHK in 2014.
In addition to the newly established “Academic Publication Fellowship”, Ms Shu set up the “Katie Shu Sui Pui Charitable Trust – Research and Publication Fund (Applied Research)” in 2015 to promote research and encourage quality research publications in the OUHK. Since three years ago, a total of 24 research projects have been funded and six outstanding published research works were presented the Outstanding Research Publication Award.
