PRO-CHANCELLOR'S
MESSAGE

Dr Eddy Fong Ching

In the 2024–25 academic year, HKMU continued to solidify its position as a dynamic and forward-looking university in Hong Kong, committed to driving societal and economic progress while nurturing the next generation of professionals and talent.

As Hong Kong's first university of applied sciences (UAS), HKMU is well-positioned to provide professional education that aligns closely with society's evolving needs. The establishment of the Alliance of Universities of Applied Sciences (the Alliance) by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China in November 2024 marked a significant milestone in advancing vocational and professional education and training. As a founding member of the Alliance, HKMU is leveraging its strengths to actively forge links with industry partners and similar institutions across the Greater Bay Area and beyond, fostering innovation, knowledge exchange and talent development.

The past year has seen HKMU achieve new heights globally, thanks to the dedication of our academic staff and students. The University's debut in the QS World University Rankings 2026, the first self-financing university and UAS in Hong Kong to achieve this recognition, is a testament to our commitment to maintaining international standards in teaching, research and faculty quality.

It has been equally gratifying to witness HKMU's growing student numbers in recent years, particularly in an increasingly competitive tertiary education landscape. This year, our total number of full-time and part-time students surpassed 21,000 for the first time. This growth underscores the University's ability to provide high-quality, industry-relevant programmes, foster collaboration with international institutions and industries, and attract outstanding students from Hong Kong and around the world.

To support this robust growth, investing in new infrastructure that enhances the learning and teaching environment at HKMU is essential. The acquisition of MU Tower in Hung Hom and the planned development of a new campus complex in Ho Man Tin are important steps in ensuring our students and faculty members have access to high-quality facilities that meet the demands of our programmes. These initiatives reflect our long-term vision to create a supportive and innovative environment that fosters collaboration, growth and academic excellence.

As a self-financing university, HKMU's journey has been made possible by the enduring support of our long-term partners and friends, who recognise the unique and vital role we play in Hong Kong's development. Through generous donations, scholarships and partnerships, they have provided valuable financial and moral backing, enabling us to enhance our infrastructure, student support and professional programmes.

A highlight example of this support in the past year was the astonishing donation of HK$300 million from the Wu Jieh Yee Charitable Foundation to fund the development of our new Ho Man Tin campus. On behalf of the entire University community – past, present and future – I extend my deepest gratitude to the Foundation for their incredible generosity.

HKMU's remarkable transformation over the years has been fuelled by the staunch support of our stakeholders, combined with the collective efforts of our staff, students and alumni. Just a few decades ago, the University began in humble circumstances, guided by a noble mission. Today, we have grown into a thriving institution offering an extensive range of programmes tailored to meet both societal and industry needs, empowering students to pursue meaningful careers. At the same time, our applied research continues to deliver impactful outcomes that benefit the community.

As HKMU evolves, it demonstrates its potential and how it can be harnessed for the benefit of all, while also contributing to Hong Kong's development as an international education hub. For all of us at HKMU, this journey has been both inspiring and transformative. Looking ahead, with our shared vision, commitment and collaborative spirit, we are confident in our ability to break new ground, redefine possibilities, and achieve even greater heights in the years to come.
