The Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK) marked its 22nd birthday today (6 Nov)
with the Alumni Homecoming Day cum Inauguration Ceremony of Campus Phase II
Donor Wall held at its Ho Man Tin campus. Some 250 OUHK donors, alumni, staff
and students joined the jubilation and witnessed the launch of the OUHK New
College Project.
The celebration kicked off with the Inauguration Ceremony of the Campus Phase II
Donor Wall to extend the University's appreciation for the support from donors
towards the OUHK's Campus Phase II Project and its fundraising efforts under the
Government's Fifth Matching Grant Scheme. It was jointly officiated by the
University's Deputy Council Chairman Mr Edward Cheung Wing-yui, Sponsorship and
Development Fund Committee (SDFC) Deputy Chairman Dr Vincent Woo Wing-fai and
President Prof. John C Y Leong.
In his welcoming
remarks, Mr Cheung said, 'With the enthusiastic support from the community, the
OUHK has achieved encouraging results in the development of its campus and
education services over the past 22 years. We are most grateful to all OUHK
community members for their dedication and devotion.'
The ceremony was followed by the
presentation of a birthday card by representatives of student and alumni
associations.
The day also celebrated the launch of the
OUHK New College Project, which was officiated by Mr Cheung, Dr Woo, Prof.
Leong, and members of the Council and the SDFC. The New College will be built on
Chung Hau Street in close vicinity of the Ho Man Tin campus. It is expected to
be ready for occupation by the end of 2013 and will offer full-time programmes
in cultural and creative arts, testing and certification and medical services to
train talent to support the Government's six crucial industries.
A series of fabulous performances by
alumni and students, including dancing, martial arts and taekwondo display,
yo-yo tricks, orchestral music and singing, was lined up for the day.
There were also sales of souvenirs
printed with the 'Open Your Eyes' design specially created by renowned local
radio programme host and designer Mr Jan Lamb. The design, representing an
abbreviation of 'Open University' and 'Open You', also carries the meaning of
widening your horizon through learning.
The OUHK is the first institution
dedicated to open and distance education in Hong Kong. Since its establishment
by the Government in 1989, the University has provided high quality and flexible
further education for over 160,000 learners. More than 60,000 of them have
graduated with qualifications at certificate, diploma, undergraduate and
postgraduate levels.
