Long-distance running requires endurance, and constant practice is the key to improvement. This principle can also be applied to learning, and hard work always pays dividends. With her perseverance on the running track, devoted distance runner Joan Fan Ching-yee persisted in her study and fulfilled her dream of becoming a nurse.

Stick to your goal and make it happen

Joan has longed to become a nurse since she was very young. When studying a healthcare programme at IVE, she already worked part-time in different clinics. After graduation, she joined a private hospital and completed its enrolled nurse programme. But Joan's wish was to become a registered nurse. In 2012, she embarked on a Higher Diploma in Nursing at the OUHK and obtained the qualification three years later. 'I am so thrilled to have achieved my goal through hard work,' she said. For future career advancement, she then moved on to a top-up programme and obtained a bachelor's degree in nursing last year.

Joan has all along been working at a private hospital. During her study at the OUHK, the practicum provided her the opportunity to experience a different working environment in public hospitals. 'The University's simulated training facilities enabled me to familiarize myself with the wards, and the practice during practicum helped me to learn beyond the books.'

On the long road to become a nursing professional, Joan demonstrated her running spirit and never grumbled about having to juggle study and work because she is really passionate about her job. 'Nursing work involves a strong sense of responsibility and commitment. We help people with our professional knowledge in the critical situations about life or death.' Now Joan has to deal with more complicated cases and shoulder heavier responsibilities such as coaching enrolled nurses.

Long runs training enhances motivation for work

oan has been practising distance running since 12 years old. Over the years, she has won a number of local and overseas marathon races. Her awards up to early this year already include: champion in the half marathon race of Hong Kong Streetathon (female elite – senior), first runner-up in the Rotary Hong Kong Ultramarathon and second runner-up in the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon (women's senior). She is now a member of the OUHK Alumni Runners Club. 'I once saw a runner wearing an OUHK T-shirt in the sports ground and I later became aware that the University has a runner club. Now I often help out with their training and suggest ways to improve members' running posture.'

Joan had once thought about becoming a full-time runner but she really loves her nursing job and eventually gave up the idea. Fortunately, her career and interest are actually complementary to each other. 'Working in hospital can be very stressful due to the heavy workload. I enjoy running and dripping with sweat after a long day's work. Chatting with friends while running makes me feel good and helps relieve my pressure.'
