Regulations for the degree of Master of Education/Master of Education in Chinese Language Education/Master of Education in Early Childhood Education/Master of Education in English Language Education/Master of Education in Drama and Language Education/Master of Education in Professional Issues in Liberal Studies

1. General

1.1

These regulations are made under paragraphs 1 to 4 of the Regulations for the Award of Postgraduate Degrees.

1.2

In these regulations definitions shall apply as in the Regulations for the Award of Postgraduate Degrees and in the Interpretation Section of the Academic Rules and Regulations.

1.3

The Regulations Governing the Articulation of Qualifications shall apply for conversion of the following postgraduate programmes to the award of Master of Education/ Master of Education in Chinese Language Education/ Master of Education in Early Childhood Education/ Master of Education in English Language Education/ Master of Education in Drama and Language Education/ Master of Education in Professional Issues in Liberal Studies as appropriate:

Postgraduate Certificates

  • Postgraduate Certificate in Adult Education
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Chinese Language Education
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Drama Education
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Educational Management
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Child Development
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Curriculum and Assessment
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Language and Learning
  • Postgraduate Certificate in English Language and Language Learning in the Contemporary World
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages
  • Postgraduate Certificate in English Studies for Language Teaching
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Chinese Studies for Language Teachng
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Liberal Studies Education
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Liberal Studies

Postgraduate Diplomas

  • Postgraduate Diploma in Liberal Studies
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Liberal Studies (Content and Pedagogy)
   
2. Entry Requirements
Pathway 1
2.1 To enter the Master of Education/Master of Education in Chinese Language Education/Master of Education in Early Childhood Education/Master of Education in English Language Education/Master of Education in Drama and Language Education/Master of Education in Professional Issues in Liberal Studies programmes – Pathway 1, a student shall normally possess:
  2.1.1 a recognized Bachelor’s degree (or its equivalent);
  and shall normally possess:
  2.1.2 a recognized teacher’s qualification; and
  2.1.3 at least two years’ teaching or training experience.
     
Pathway 2
2.2 To enter the Master of Education/Master of Education in Chinese Language Education/Master of Education in English Language Education/Master of Education in Drama and Language Education programmes – Pathway 2, a student shall possess:
  2.2.1 a recognized degree (or its equivalent); and
  2.2.2 a qualification in Post-graduate Programme in Subject Knowledge (PGSK) for English/Chinese Language Teachers approved by the Education and Manpower Bureau;
  and shall normally possess:
  2.2.3 a recognized teacher’s qualification; and
  2.2.4 at least two years’ teaching or training experience.
3. Master of Education
3.1 To be eligible for the award of the degree of Master of Education, a student shall:
  3.1.1 comply with the Regulations for Admission, Registration and Maintenance of Status; and
  3.1.2 comply with the Regulations for the Award of Postgraduate Degrees; and
  3.1.3 have been deemed to satisfy in full the specified pre-entry requirements for the programme of study; and
  For Pathway 1 (MED1)
  3.1.4 obtain at least 60 credits in courses at Postgraduate level prescribed by the regulations.
  For Pathway 2 (MED2)
  3.1.5 obtain at least 40 credits in courses at Postgraduate level prescribed by the regulations.
3.2 For the degree of Master of Education, the University has prescribed that a student must complete:
  For Pathway 1 (MED1)
  3.2.1 60 credits from courses in Table 1.
  For Pathway 2 (MED2)
  3.2.2 40 credits from courses in Table 1, so that:
   
3.2.2.1

holders of the approved PGSK for English Language Teachers must complete 40 credits from courses labelled M, CLE, ELE or CST.

3.2.2.2 holders of the approved PGSK for Chinese Language Teachers must complete 40 credits from courses labelled M, CLE, ELE or EST.
4. Master of Education in Chinese Language Education
4.1 To be eligible for the award of the degree of Master of Education in Chinese Language Education, a student shall:
  4.1.1 comply with the Regulations for Admission, Registration and Maintenance of Status; and
  4.1.2 comply with the Regulations for the Award of Postgraduate Degrees; and
  4.1.3 have been deemed to satisfy in full the specified pre-entry requirements for the programme of study; and
  For Pathway 1 (MEDCLE1)
  4.1.4 obtain at least 60 credits in courses at Postgraduate level prescribed by the regulations.
  For Pathway 2 (MEDCLE2)
  4.1.5 obtain at least 40 credits in courses at Postgraduate level prescribed by the regulations.
4.2 For the degree of Master of Education in Chinese Language Education, the University has prescribed that a student must complete the following courses from Table 1:
  For Pathway 1 (MEDCLE1)
EDU E808C; and
CHIN E811C/CHIN E811CF; and
EDU E817C (or EDU E817 enrolled before April 2003 semester)
  For Pathway 2 (MEDCLE2)
EDU E808C; and
EDU E817C (or EDU E817 enrolled before April 2003 semester)
5. Master of Education in Early Childhood Education
5.1 To be eligible for the award of the degree of Master of Education in Early Childhood Education, a student shall:
  5.1.1 comply with the Regulations for Admission, Registration and Maintenance of Status; and
  5.1.2 comply with the Regulations for the Award of Postgraduate Degrees; and
  5.1.3 have been deemed to satisfy in full the specified pre-entry requirements for the programme of study; and
  5.1.4 obtain at least 60 credits in courses at Postgraduate level prescribed by the regulations.
5.2 For the degree of Master of Education in Early Childhood Education, the University has prescribed that a student must complete the following courses in Table 1:
  5.2.1 either EDU E805C or EDU E815/EDU E825; and
  5.2.2 either EDU E813C or EDU E823; and
  5.2.3 EDU E882CF
6. Master of Education in English Language Education
6.1 To be eligible for the award of the degree of Master of Education in English Language Education, a student shall:
  6.1.1 comply with the Regulations for Admission, Registration and Maintenance of Status; and
  6.1.2 comply with the Regulations for the Award of Postgraduate Degrees; and
  6.1.3 have been deemed to satisfy in full the specified pre-entry requirements for the programme of study; and
  For Pathway 1 (MEDELE1)
  6.1.4 obtain at least 60 credits in courses at Postgraduate level prescribed by the regulations.
  For Pathway 2 (MEDELE2)
  6.1.5 obtain at least 40 credits in courses at Postgraduate level prescribed by the regulations.
6.2 For the degree of Master of Education in English Language Education, the University has prescribed that a student must complete the following courses from Table 1:
  For Pathway 1 (MEDELE1)
EDU E809/EDU E819; and
ENGL E810/ENGL E810F; and
either EDU E817/EDU E846 or EDU E891 / EDU E801
  For Pathway 2 (MEDELE2)
EDU E809/EDU E819; and
either EDU E817/EDU E846 or EDU E891 / EDU E801
7. Master of Education in Drama and Language Education
7.1 To be eligible for the award of the degree of Master of Education in Drama and Language Education, a student shall:
  7.1.1 comply with the Regulations for Admission, Registration and Maintenance of Status; and
  7.1.2 comply with the Regulations for the Award of Postgraduate Degrees; and
  7.1.3 have been deemed to satisfy in full the specified pre-entry requirements for the programme of study; and
  For Pathway 1 (MEDDLE1)
  7.1.4 obtain at least 60 credits in courses at Postgraduate level prescribed by the regulations.
  For Pathway 2 (MEDDLE2)
  7.1.5 obtain at least 40 credits in courses at Postgraduate level prescribed by the regulations.
7.2 For the degree of Master of Education in Drama and Language Education, the University has prescribed that a student must complete:
  7.2.1

For Pathway 1 (MEDDLE1)
EDU E881C; and
either ENGL E810/ENGL E810F or CHIN E811C/CHIN E811CF; and
one other course from Table 1.

  7.2.2

For Pathway 2 (MEDDLE2)
EDU E881C; and
one other course from Table 1 except that for holders of approved PGSK for English Teachers, ENGL E810/ENGL E810F is excluded and for holders of approved PGSK for Chinese Teachers, CHIN E811C/CHIN E811CF is excluded.

8. Master of Education in Professional Issues in Liberal Studies
8.1 To be eligible for the award of the degree of Master of Education in Professional Issues in Liberal Studies, a student shall:
  8.1.1 comply with the Regulations for Admission, Registration and Maintenance of Status; and
  8.1.2 comply with the Regulations for the Award of Postgraduate Degrees; and
  8.1.3 have been deemed to satisfy in full the specified pre-entry requirements for the programme of study; and
  8.1.4 obtain at least 60 credits in courses at Postgraduate level prescribed by the regulations.
8.2 For the degree of Master of Education in Professional Issues in Liberal Studies, the University has prescribed that a student must complete the following courses in Table 1:
  8.2.1 EDU E880; and
  8.2.2 either EDU E817/EDU E817C, or EDU E846; and
  8.2.3 other than CHIN E811C/CHIN E811CF and ENGL E810/ENGL E810F.

  9. EDU E815 has been replaced by EDU E825. If students have successfully completed EDU E815, they are deemed to have satisfied the requirements of EDU E825.
