Regulations for the Diploma in Early Childhood Education

 

1. General
1.1 These regulations are made under paragraphs 1 to 4 of the Regulations for the Award of Sub-degree Qualifications (Sub-degrees).
1.2 In these regulations definitions shall apply as in the Regulations for the Award of Sub-degree Qualifications and in the Interpretation Section of the Academic Rules and Regulations.
   
2. Entry Requirements
2.1 To enter the Diploma in Early Childhood Education programme (DECE, DECE1 or DECE2), a student shall normally:
  2.1.1 possess a Qualified Kindergarten Teacher status, OR
  2.1.2 possess a Registered Child Care Worker status, OR
  2.1.3 have passed at least five subjects in the Hong Kong Certificate of Education (HKCEE) (or its equivalent) including Chinese Language and English Language (or attained Level 2 or above in these two subjects).
2.2 For DECE, in addition to 2.1, a student shall normally:
  2.2.1 be a teacher or child care worker in a local kindergarten, nursery or child care centre, AND
  2.2.2 have the consent of the head/principal of the kindergarten/nursery/child care centre where he/she works that staff from the University can enter the classrooms to conduct class observation.
2.3 For DECE1, in addition to 2.1, a student shall normally:
  2.3.1 be an employee in a local kindergarten, nursery or child care centre, AND
  2.3.2 have the consent of the head/principal of the kindergarten/nursery/child care centre where he/she works that twelve weeks of teaching-practice for the student will be arranged in the kindergarten/nursery in accordance to the requirements of the University.
2.4 For DECE2, in addition to 2.1, a student  shall normally:
  2.4.1 undertake to serve as a student teacher (without salary) in a local kindergarten/nursery for not less than twelve weeks as arranged by the University, AND
  2.4.2 have satisfactory performance during a selection interview arranged by the School.
     
3. Diploma in Early Childhood Education (DECE, DECE1 or DECE2)
3.1 To be eligible for the award of the Diploma in Early Childhood Education (DECE, DECE1 or DECE2), a student shall:
  3.1.1 comply with the Regulations for Admission, Registration and Maintenance of Status; and
  3.1.2 comply with the Regulations for the Award of Sub-degree Qualifications (Sub-degrees); and
  3.1.3 have been deemed to satisfy in full the specified entry requirements for the programme of study and satisfied the requirements in 2.1 and 2.2 or 2.3 or 2.4 and successfully registered as a student in the programme; and
  3.1.4 obtain at least 66 credits in courses prescribed by the regulations.
3.2 For the Diploma in Early Childhood Education (DECE, DECE1 or DECE2), the University has prescribed that a student must:
  3.2.1 successfully complete 46 credits from all courses in Table 1; and
  3.2.2 successfully complete a total of 20 credits from the following in Table 2:
    3.2.2.1 5 credits from course labelled CLP; and
    3.2.2.2 5 credits from courses labelled ELP; and
    3.2.2.3 5 credits from courses labelled PP; and
    3.2.2.4 5 credits from course labelled IT.

Notes:

  1. Courses form excluded combinations with other courses. Only one of the courses of the excluded combinations can count towards an OUHK award. Students should refer to the list of excluded combinations for details.
     
  2. If students have successfully completed ENGL E100, they are deemed to have satisfied the requirements of ENGL E110 and ENGL E120.
