Bachelor of Social Sciences in Economics (BSSCE) |
1. |
To be eligible for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Social Sciences in Economics, a student shall: |
|
a) |
comply with the Regulations for Admission, Registration and Maintenance of Status, and; |
|
b) |
comply with the Regulations for the Award of Undergraduate Degrees; and |
|
c) |
obtain at least 120 credits of which no more than 40 credits shall be obtained at Foundation level; and |
|
d) |
obtain at least 100 credits in courses prescribed by the regulations as appropriate to the degree for which notice has been given, including at least 20 credits in courses at Higher level. |
2. |
For the degree of Bachelor of Social Sciences in Economics, the University has prescribed that a student must: |
|
a) |
successfully complete 50 credits of compulsory core courses labelled SC in Table 1, i.e. |
|
|
(i) |
10 credits from MATH S112/MATH S122; |
|
|
|
or 10 credits from BUS B170 or BUS B273; |
|
|
|
or 10 credits from both BUS B171 and BUS B172/BUS B272; and |
|
|
(ii) |
5 credits from IT L150/IT E150 or BIS B121/BIS B123; and |
|
|
(iii) |
5 credits from ENGL A100/ENGL A101 or BUS B100; and |
|
|
(iv) |
10 credits from ECON A230/ECON A230C; and |
|
|
|
OR |
|
|
|
10 credits from both ECON A231/ECON A231C and ECON A232/ECON A232C; and |
|
|
(v) |
10 credits from MATH S242/STAT S242; and |
|
|
(vi) |
10 credits from ECON A301 or 10 credits from both ECON A311 and ECON A312; and |
|
b) |
successfully complete 40 credits from courses labelled SF, SM or SH in Table 1, of which at least 10 credits must be gained at Higher level (labelled SH) a, b, c, d; and |
|
c) |
successfully complete 10 credits from courses labelled BM e in Table 1; and |
|
d) |
successfully complete an additional 20 credits of the courses at Foundation, Middle or Higher level offered by the University, provided that, of the total 120 credits*, no more than 40 are gained at Foundation level. |
|

Of the 120 credits required for the attainment of the degree, students can complete up to 40 credits of courses in a language of instruction other than English. |

Bachelor of Social Sciences with Honours in Economics (BSSCHE) |
1. |
To be eligible for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Social Sciences with Honours in Economics, a student shall: |
|
a) |
comply with the Regulations for Admission, Registration and Maintenance of Status; and |
|
b) |
comply with the Regulations for the Award of Undergraduate Degrees; and |
|
c) |
obtain at least 160 credits of which no more than 40 credits shall be obtained at Foundation level; and |
|
d) |
obtain at least 40 credits in courses at the Higher level; and |
|
e) |
successfully complete the prescribed programme of studies. |
2. |
For the degree of Bachelor of Social Sciences with Honours in Economics, the University has prescribed that a student must: |
|
a) |
successfully complete 60 credits of compulsory core courses labelled SCH in Table 1, i.e. |
|
|
(i) |
10 credits from MATH S112/MATH S122; |
|
|
|
or 10 credits from BUS B170 or BUS B273; |
|
|
|
or 10 credits from both BUS B171 and BUS B172/BUS B272; and |
|
|
(ii) |
5 credits from IT L150/IT E150 or BIS B121/BIS B123; and |
|
|
(iii) |
5 credits from ENGL A100/ENGL A101 or BUS B100; and |
|
|
(iv) |
10 credits from ECON A230/ECON A230C; and |
|
|
|
OR |
|
|
|
10 credits from both ECON A231/ECON A231C and ECON A232/ECON A232C; and |
|
|
(v) |
10 credits from MATH S242/STAT S242 and |
|
|
(vi) |
10 credits from ECON A301 or 10 credits from both ECON A311 and ECON A312; and |
|
|
(vii) |
10 credits from ECON A302 or 10 credits from both ECON A313 and ECON A314; and |
|
b) |
successfully complete 70 credits from courses labelled SFH, SMH or SHH in Table 1, of which at least 30 credits must be gained at Higher level (labelled SHH) a, b, c, d; and |
|
c) |
successfully complete 10 credits from courses labelled BMH e in Table 1; and |
|
d) |
successfully complete an additional 20 credits of the courses at Foundation, Middle or Higher level offered by the University, provided that, of the total 160 credits*, no more than 40 are gained at Foundation level. |
|

Of the 160 credits required for the attainment of the degree, students can complete up to 50 credits of courses in a language of instruction other than English. |
|
a: |
Students who have successfully completed SOCI A202 or HIST A202 before the April 2001 presentation will be deemed to have satisfied the requirement of a 10-credit Middle level course labelled SM or SMH. |
|
b: |
Students who have successfully completed ECON A306 will be deemed to have satisfied the requirement of ECON A203 or a 10-credit Higher level course labelled SH or SHH. |
|
c: |
Students who have successfully completed ECON A320C or ECON A320 will be deemed to have satisfied the requirement of ECON A202C or a 10-credit Higher level course labelled SH or SHH. |
|
d: |
Students who have successfully completed any course labelled BH or BHH before the April 2001 presentation will be deemed to have satisfied the requirement of a 10-credit Higher level course labelled SH or SHH. |
|
e: |
Students who have successfully completed FIN B382/FIN B400 will be deemed to have satisfied the requirement of FIN B280 and a 5-credit course labelled BM or BMH. |
3. |
Each degree with Honours shall be conferred with a classification of First Class, Second Class (Upper Division), Second Class (Lower Division) or Third Class save that exceptionally a degree may be conferred without classification. |
4. |
Subject to the requirements of the relevant programme of study, each person on whom an Honours degree is to be conferred shall be assigned to a classification determined by the University according to its regulations. |

For the calculation of scores for classification purposes in the degree of Bachelor of Social Sciences with Honours in Economics, the University has deemed that “Group (a)” shall consist of the best 40 credits in courses at Higher level listed in Table 1, and that “Group (b)” shall consist of the best 40 credits in courses at Higher or Middle level listed in Table 1, where such credits are not taken into account in “Group (a)”. Further, that “X” shall equal one, that is “Group (a)” and “Group (b)” shall be equally weighted.Further, that “X” shall equal one, that is “Group (a)” and “Group (b)” shall be equally weighted.
