Regulations for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Chinese and English, Bachelor of Arts in Chinese and English (Specialization in Chinese) / (Specialization in English), Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Chinese and English and Bachelor of Arts with Honour

These regulations are made under paragraphs 1 to 4 of the Regulations for the Award of Undergraduate Degrees.

In these regulations definitions shall apply as in the Regulations for the Award of Undergraduate Degrees and in the Interpretation Section of the Academic Rules and Regulations.

Bachelor of Arts in Chinese and English (BACE)
For students enrolled with the University before 2018 Spring term who have indicated that they would like to graduate with the original award title without specifying the specialization.
1. To be eligible for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Chinese and English, a student shall:
  a) comply with the Regulations for Admission, Registration and Maintenance of Status; and
  b) comply with the Regulations for the Award of Undergraduate Degrees; and
  c) obtain at least 120 credits of which no more than 40 credits shall be obtained at Foundation level; and
  d) obtain at least 100 credits in courses prescribed by the regulations as appropriate to the degree for which notice has been given, including at least 20 credits in courses at Higher level.
2. For the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Chinese and English, the University has prescribed that a student must:
  a) successfully complete 20 credits from four compulsory courses labelled CCF and ECF in Table 1 (CHIN A171C, CHIN A172C, ENGL A131 and ENGL A132); and
  b) * successfully complete 10 credits from the Translation courses labelled TC in Table 1; and
  c) * i) successfully complete 40 credits from the Chinese courses labelled CC, and 30 credits from the English courses labelled EC in Table 1;
    OR  
    ii) successfully complete 40 credits from the English courses labelled EC, and 30 credits from the Chinese courses labelled CC in Table 1; and

Of the 80 credits gained from paragraphs 2b) and 2c), students must complete at least 20 credits in courses at Higher level.
  d) successfully complete 20 credits from any Foundation, Middle or Higher level courses offered by the University, provided that, of the total 120 credits, no more than 40 credits are gained at Foundation level.
Bachelor of Arts in Chinese and English (Specialization in Chinese) (BACEC)
3. To be eligible for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Chinese and English (Specialization in Chinese), a student shall:
  a) comply with the Regulations for Admission, Registration and Maintenance of Status; and
  b) comply with the Regulations for the Award of Undergraduate Degrees; and
  c) obtain at least 120 credits of which no more than 40 credits shall be obtained at Foundation level; and
  d) obtain at least 100 credits in courses prescribed by the regulations as appropriate to the degree for which notice has been given, including at least 20 credits in courses at Higher level.
4. For the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Chinese and English (Specialization in Chinese), the University has prescribed that a student must:
  a) successfully complete 20 credits from four compulsory courses labelled CCF and ECF in Table 1 (CHIN A171C, CHIN A172C, ENGL A131 and ENGL A132); and
  b) * successfully complete 10 credits from the Translation courses labelled TC in Table 1; and
  c) * successfully complete 40 credits from the Chinese courses labelled CC, and 30 credits from the English courses labelled EC in Table 1;

  d) successfully complete 20 credits from any Foundation, Middle or Higher level courses offered by the University, provided that, of the total 120 credits, no more than 40 credits are gained at Foundation level.
Bachelor of Arts in Chinese and English (Specialization in English) (BACEE)
5. To be eligible for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Chinese and English (Specialization in English), a student shall:
  a) comply with the Regulations for Admission, Registration and Maintenance of Status; and
  b) comply with the Regulations for the Award of Undergraduate Degrees; and
  c) obtain at least 120 credits of which no more than 40 credits shall be obtained at Foundation level; and
  d) obtain at least 100 credits in courses prescribed by the regulations as appropriate to the degree for which notice has been given, including at least 20 credits in courses at Higher level.
6. For the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Chinese and English (Specialization in English), the University has prescribed that a student must:
  a) successfully complete 20 credits from four compulsory courses labelled CCF and ECF in Table 1 (CHIN A171C, CHIN A172C, ENGL A131 and ENGL A132); and
  b) * successfully complete 10 credits from the Translation courses labelled TC in Table 1; and
  c) * successfully complete 40 credits from the English courses labelled EC, and 30 credits from the Chinese courses labelled CC in Table 1; and

Of the 80 credits gained from paragraphs 6b) and 6c), students must complete at least 20 credits in courses at Higher level.
  d) successfully complete 20 credits from any Foundation, Middle or Higher level courses offered by the University, provided that, of the total 120 credits, no more than 40 credits are gained at Foundation level.
Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Chinese and English (BAHCE)
For students enrolled with the University before 2018 Spring term who have indicated that they would like to graduate with the original award title without specifying the specialization.
7. To be eligible for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Chinese and English, a student shall:
  a) comply with the Regulations for Admission, Registration and Maintenance of Status; and
  b) comply with the Regulations for the Award of Undergraduate Degrees; and
  c) obtain at least 160 credits of which no more than 40 credits shall be obtained at Foundation level; and
  d) obtain at least 50 credits in courses at Higher level; and
  e) successfully complete the prescribed programme of studies.
8. For the degree of Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Chinese and English, the University has prescribed that a student must:
  a) successfully complete 20 credits from four compulsory courses labelled CCF and ECF in Table 1 (CHIN A171C, CHIN A172C, ENGL A131 and ENGL A132); and
  b) * successfully complete 20 credits from the Translation courses labelled TC in Table 1; and
  c) * i) successfully complete 60 credits from the Chinese courses labelled CC, and 40 credits from the English courses labelled EC in Table 1;
    OR  
    ii) successfully complete 60 credits from the English courses labelled EC, and 40 credits from the Chinese courses labelled CC in Table 1;

Of the 120 credits gained from paragraphs 8b) and 8c), students must complete at least 50 credits in courses at Higher level.
  d) successfully complete 20 credits from any Foundation, Middle or Higher level courses offered by the University, provided that, of the total 160 credits, no more than 40 credits are gained at Foundation level.
Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Chinese and English (Specialization in Chinese) (BAHCEC)
9. To be eligible for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Chinese and English (Specialization in Chinese), a student shall:
  a) comply with the Regulations for Admission, Registration and Maintenance of Status; and
  b) comply with the Regulations for the Award of Undergraduate Degrees; and
  c) obtain at least 160 credits of which no more than 40 credits shall be obtained at Foundation level; and
  d) obtain at least 50 credits in courses at Higher level; and
  e) successfully complete the prescribed programme of studies.
10. For the degree of Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Chinese and English (Specialization in Chinese), the University has prescribed that a student must:
  a) successfully complete 20 credits from four compulsory courses labelled CCF and ECF in Table 1 (CHIN A171C, CHIN A172C, ENGL A131 and ENGL A132); and
  b) * successfully complete 20 credits from the Translation courses labelled TC in Table 1; and
  c) * successfully complete 60 credits from the Chinese courses labelled CC, and 40 credits from the English courses labelled EC in Table 1; and

Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Chinese and English (Specialization in English) (BAHCEE)
11. To be eligible for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Chinese and English (Specialization in English), a student shall:
  a) comply with the Regulations for Admission, Registration and Maintenance of Status; and
  b) comply with the Regulations for the Award of Undergraduate Degrees; and
  c) obtain at least 160 credits of which no more than 40 credits shall be obtained at Foundation level; and
  d) obtain at least 50 credits in courses at Higher level; and
  e) successfully complete the prescribed programme of studies.
12. For the degree of Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Chinese and English (Specialization in English), the University has prescribed that a student must:
  a) successfully complete 20 credits from four compulsory courses labelled CCF and ECF in Table 1 (CHIN A171C, CHIN A172C, ENGL A131 and ENGL A132); and
  b) * successfully complete 20 credits from the Translation courses labelled TC in Table 1; and
  c) * successfully complete 60 credits from the English courses labelled EC, and 40 credits from the Chinese courses labelled CC in Table 1; and

Of the 120 credits gained from paragraphs 12b) and 12c), students must complete at least 50 credits in courses at Higher level.
  d) successfully complete 20 credits from any Foundation, Middle or Higher level courses offered by the University, provided that, of the total 160 credits, no more than 40 credits are gained at Foundation level.

13.

Each degree with Honours shall be conferred with a classification of First Class, Second Class (Upper Division), Second Class (Lower Division) or Third Class save that exceptionally a degree may be conferred without classification.
14. Subject to the requirements of the relevant programme of study, each person on whom an Honours degree is to be conferred shall be assigned to a classification determined by the University according to its regulations.
15. For the calculation of scores for classification purposes in the degree of Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Chinese and English or Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Chinese and English (Specialization in Chinese) or Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Chinese and English (Specialization in English), the University has deemed that “Group (a)” shall consist of the best 40 credits in courses at Higher level listed in Table 1, and that “Group (b)” shall consist of the best 40 credits in courses at Higher or Middle level listed in Table 1, where such credits are not taken into account in “Group (a)”. Further, that “X” shall equal one, that is “Group (a)” and “Group (b)” shall be equally weighted. Notes:

  1. With effect from 1 January 2018, indication of specialization of either Chinese or English will be included in the award titles for the Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Chinese and English and Bachelor of Arts in Chinese and English, if appropriate.
     
  2. Graduates of Bachelor of Arts in Chinese and English (specialization in English) shall only be allowed to articulate to the same specialization in English for the honours degree award. Likewise, graduates of Bachelor of Arts in Chinese and English (specialization in Chinese) shall only be allowed to articulate to the same specialization in Chinese for the honours degree award.
