Aims

The course aims at letting students analyse different aspects of advanced level translation with an emphasis on cultural and stylistic issues, familiarising them with essential rhetorical features which characterise literary texts through extensive reading of literary works, and enabling students to understand stylistic transfer between English and Chinese, their cultural differences, and aesthetic functions.

Learning support

Through learning different literary genres and stylistics features that are essential in determining how a text is written and formulated in cultural clothes. Suggested presentation topics are given to students in advance for reference. Consultations are provided to students outside formal class hours for further enhancement of translation knowledge and skills specifically tailored for literary texts. The literary texts selected for teaching will depend on the expertise of the teachers who take up this course.

Assessment

Assignment 1 (term paper): 25%

Assignment 2 (translation): 25%

Oral presentation: 20%

Quiz: 30%

Online Requirement

Students are welcome to use the Online Learning Environment (OLE) which contains plenty of information and materials for them to read at home. The online Discussion Board offers an additional means for students to communicate with the teachers and each other.

Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
