Aims

This course aims to introduce students to the major socio-cultural issues through examining various literary works, critical writings and films. It will broaden students' intellectual horizon and cultural literacy.

Contents

The course covers the following topics:

Introduction: Understanding the socio-cultural formation of writings
Class and gender
Multiculturalism, globalisation and glocalisation
Traditions and modern resistance
The Lost Generation
Conflicts in colonial and post-colonial contexts
Writing and speaking workshop for postgraduate students

Learning Support

The course consists of lectures only.

Assessment

There are three assignments: an oral presentation (20%), a term test (30%) and a term paper (40%).

Class participation counts for 10%.

Online requirement

Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
