This course is one of the core courses of the BSc / BSc (Hons) in Product Design, Testing and Certification programme. The overall aim of this course is to develop students' understanding and knowledge of the requirements of national and international product environmental, health and safety standards. The presentation of this course is subject to final approval by the University. Any details of this course may be changed without further notice.

Advisory prerequisite(s)
Students enrolling on TC S372 are advised to have completed TC S319 Quality Management for Science and Technology and TC S409 Safety and Reliability for Science and Technology.

Aims
The overall aim of this course is to provide students with comprehensive knowledge of product environmental, health and safety standards.

Contents
The course covers the following topics:

  • Fundamentals of product life-cycle, standards and regulations
  • Product safety standards
  • Health issues related to product development
  • Product development for environmental compliance
  • An integrated approach to product development

Learning support
There will be regular tutorial and surgery sessions throughout the course.

There will be two practical sessions (day schools) in TC S372. Each session will last for three hours, and students are required to attend at least one of these. Students will work in teams to complete various assigned tasks. If students do not attend at least one of these, then they will fail the course (even if they passed both the continuous assessment and the examination).

Assessment
There will be two assignments and a written final examination. Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).

Online requirement
This course is supported by the Online Learning Environment (OLE). You can find the latest course information from the OLE. Through the OLE, you can communicate electronically with your tutor and the Course Coordinator as well as other students. To access the OLE, you will need to have access to the Internet. The use of the OLE is required for the study of this course. All tutorials and surgeries will be video-recorded and available for playback from the OLE.

Equipment
Students will need access to a computer system suitable for connecting to the Internet. The recommended minimum computing requirements are:

  • Pentium IV CPU
  • SVGA display card and monitor
  • 1 GB RAM
  • 500 MB free hard disk space
  • Broadband Internet access
  • Keyboard and mouse
