Aims

This course aims to equip students with a comprehensive knowledge of the sports industry and its evolution. It covers the transformative power of sports in society, governance, the business of global sports and entertainment, participatory sports, the role of sports in urban environments, and effective sports branding and sponsorship strategies. Through this course, students will develop the skills and knowledge necessary to navigate and excel in the dynamic field of sports marketing.

Contents

This course covers the following topics:

  • Global sports industry (scope and evolution)
  • Sport's power and responsibility (transforming society)
  • Governance and international institutions in sports
  • The business of global sports
  • The business of sports entertainment
  • Participatory sports and sports in the city
  • Sports branding and sponsorship

Learning support

A total of 45 contact hours across one term, consisting of two three-hour lectures, four three-hour tutorials, and nine three-hour field study.

Assessment

The continuous assessment of this course accounts for 100% of the course score. It consists of two written assignments (70% in total), one compulsory oral presentation (20%), and class participation (10%). Students are required to complete their assignments using word processing software (such as Microsoft Word) and submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).

Online requirement

The course is supported by the Online Learning Environment (OLE). Students can find the latest course information from the OLE. Through the OLE, students can communicate electronically with their tutor and the Course Coordinator as well as other students. Course materials are available in print form but students can also access them online. To access the OLE, students will need to have access to the Internet. The use of the OLE is required for the study of this course.
