Aims

SOSC 1022AED Understanding Sociology aims to provide students with:

  • an understanding of basic sociological concepts, theories and research methods;
  • skills in applying the concepts and theories to everyday life;
  • knowledge of the major components of social structures and institutions and how they interact with each other; and
  • a solid grasp of the major issues related to social and global inequalities, gender and social change.

Contents

The course covers the following topics:

  • The sociological perspective
  • Social groups and social control
  • Social inequality
  • Social institutions
  • Social change

Learning support

  • Teaching and learning
    The custom textbook and the Study Guide, together with four face-to-face tutorials and three day schools, are the main strategies to help students achieve the learning outcomes. Students can also consult the tutor by phone about the course knowledge and their performance within the designated hours. The overall course delivery will be monitored by the Course Coordinator as well.
  • Online support
    The Online Learning Environment (OLE), being an additional support, gives students online access to the electronic copies of the course materials and Study Guide; presentation schedule; assignments and admits e-submission of assignments. Although participation is optional, students are also encouraged to take part in the Discussion Board therein to enhance their self-study and learning.

Assessment

Students' performance is assessed by continuous assessment, taking up 100% of course grade. There are three assignments requesting students to write essays to address what are asked.

  • Assignment 1, worth 30%, evaluates materials covered in Unit 1 and/or Unit 2, achieving LOs 1 to 4.
  • Assignment 2, worth 30%, evaluates materials covered in Unit 3 and/or Unit 4, achieving LOs 1 to 4.
  • Assignment 3, worth 40%, evaluates materials covered in Unit 4 and/or Unit 5, achieving LOs 1 to 4.

Online requirement

Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).

This course will be delivered using a custom textbook supplemented by Study Guides and Readings. The chapters of the custom textbook are selected from the following textbook.

Anderson, M L and Taylor, H F (2020) Sociology: The Essentials, 10th edn, USA: Cengage.

The Study Guides will indicate when you should read each chapter of the custom textbook.
