Aims
This course aims to help students appreciate that the understanding of crime has been very much affected by wider social, cultural, economic and political factors. It also introduces students to the major theories and perspectives on crime and their applications in explaining different types of crimes in contemporary society.

Contents
The course covers the following topics:

  • The nature of crime and punishment, and wider social, cultural, economic and political factors
  • Criminological theories
  • Selected arising crime issues in late modern societ
  • Application and evaluation of criminological theories to the analysis of selected crimes

Learning Support
This course will be taught in face-to-face mode. Lectures will be held on weekday evenings or Saturdays, normally three hours per week.

Assessment
Assessment includes an assignment, a presentation and an exam. Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).

Set Book(s):
There is no set book for this course. Academic journal articles and book chapters will be assigned as references for different topics of the course.
