Lectures will be scheduled on weekday evenings, Saturdays and Sundays.

SCI 8005SEF is a course designed by the School of Science and Technology for the Postgraduate programme.

Aims

This course is designed for students studying Medical Laboratory Science and provides insights into and an understanding of theoretical and practical elements of anatomical and cellular pathology. Students will learn about normal histology, tissue processing procedures and how to recognise histopathological abnormalities.

Contents

The course covers the following topics:

  • Introduction of histopathology
  • Histology techniques
  • Tissue and its types
  • Microtome
  • Cryostat
  • Progressive, regressive, vital, supravital staining
  • Cytology techniques
  • Immunohistochemistry
  • Electron microscopy

Assessment

Course assessment includes continuous assessment and two final examinations. Continuous assessment includes a mid-term test and laboratory reports. A three-hour final written examination and a three-hour final practical examination will be conducted at the end of the course.

There is no textbook for the course. Major references will be used instead. The instructor will provide lecture notes and other necessary learning materials.
