Aims

This course intends to introduce the scientific study of developmental psychology and establish a solid foundation for further exploration in developmental psychology. It broadly covers the major concepts, theories, theoretical approaches and empirical findings in the field. It also demonstrates the applications of developmental psychology across the human lifespan.

Contents

The course covers the following topics:

  • Nature, facets, factors and theories of development
  • Research approaches and methods for development
  • Biological basis of development
  • Conception and prenatal development
  • Physical, cognitive and psychosocial development in infancy
  • Physical, cognitive and psychosocial development in early childhood
  • Physical, cognitive and psychosocial development in middle and late childhood
  • Physical, cognitive and psychosocial development in adolescence
  • Physical, cognitive and psychosocial development in early adulthood
  • Physical, cognitive and psychosocial development in middle adulthood
  • Physical, cognitive and psychosocial development in late adulthood

Learning support

There will be eleven two-hour tutorials and three day schools.

Assessment

Student's performance is assessed by continuous assessment, taking up 100% of the course grade. There are five assignments for the course. The best four scores out of the five assignments will be counted towards the course grade. Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
