COMP 2010SED Computing Fundamentals with Java is a two-term, six-credit-unit, 2000-level course within the Bachelor of Computing with Honours in Internet Technology (BCITH) programme suite and the Bachelor of Science with Honours in Computing and Networking (BSCICNH) programme suite. It is a compulsory course for BCITH and BSCICNH. This course is designed to provide a solid foundation in the fundamentals of computing and is suitable for students who do not have prior experience in programming. The problem solving aspect of computing will be emphasised. The main focus is to learn an object-oriented programming language (Java) and use it to solve problems. The software development cycle will also be introduced.

Aims

This course aims to develop students’ knowledge of the scientific study of personality in psychology. It will review major theoretical explanations of the making and development of personality and identify the various investigation and measurement strategies. psychology, understand the latest research methodologies in this field, and apply these learnings to their daily lives.

Contents

This course will cover the basic approach as well as the dominant theories in personality psychology. It will cover the following topics:

  • What is personality?
  • How is personality studied and assessed?
  • Psychoanalytic aspects of personality
  • Neo-analytic and ego aspects of personality
  • Biological aspects of personality
  • Behavioural and learning aspects of personality
  • Cognitive aspects of personality
  • Trait aspects of personality
  • Humanistic, existential and positive aspects of personality
  • Where will we find personality?

Learning support

The textbook explains the essential concepts, theories and findings in personality psychology as well as its areas of application. The study guide summarises and elaborates the textbook contents further to facilitate students' self-learning. Students can consolidate their knowledge by attending nine tutorials and a day school.

Assessment

Students' performance will be evaluated by continuous assessment in terms of the best three out of four written assignments (60%) and a final examination (40%). Students must pass both evaluations to pass the course.

Online requirement

Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).

Equipment

A PC-compatible computer ready for connecting to the Internet is essential. The minimum configuration of the computer is:

  • PC with an x86 CPU or equivalent
  • 1GB RAM
  • Hard disk
  • Sound card with speakers

You need to be familiar with the basic use of a computer including keyboard, mouse and word processing software. Experience in using email, the Internet and the World Wide Web is also essential.

Software

You should have Windows with Microsoft Word. Other software will be downloaded from the Internet. You may need to use OpenOffice to prepare assignment answers.
