MATH 1220SED is a distance learning course particularly designed for those who aim for a degree in Electronics, Social Sciences and Economics. This course focuses on the branch of mathematics, calculus and analytic geometry that freshmen and sophomores study in order to equip themselves for advances in technology.

Aims

This course aims to:

  • develop students' analytical skills to help them become independent learners;
  • lead students to appreciate the discipline of mathematics;
  • provide a transition between school and university mathematics and the associated learning environments; and
  • develop mathematical techniques for pursuing middle and higher level courses in mathematics and applied science.

Contents

This course consists of the following topics:

Unit 1        Relations and functions

Unit 2        Systems of equations

Unit 3        Matrices

Unit 4        Modelling and models

Unit 5        Differentiation

Unit 6        Transcendental functions and their derivatives

Unit 7        Applications of differentiation

Unit 8        Integration

Unit 9        Techniques of integration

Unit 10      Applications of integrals

Unit 11      Vectors

Learning support

There will be seven tutorials and five surgeries across the two terms for the whole course.

Assessment

There are three tutor-marked assignments and one examination in this course. The assignments will account for 30% of the Overall Course Score, which each assignment accounting for 10%, while the examination will account for 70%.

Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).

Online requirement

This course is supported by the Online Learning Environment (OLE). You can find the latest course information on the OLE. Through the OLE, you can communicate electronically with your tutor and the Course Coordinator as well as other students. To access the OLE, students will need to have access to the Internet. The use of the OLE is required for the study and assessment of this course.

Equipment

You will need access to a scientific calculator and a computer system operating under Windows XP or above.

Software

You will be required to purchase a copy of the software package Scientific Notebook. Some units and assignments will include work with this software.
