Important note
This course will be taught through a face-to-face postgraduate mode commencing in January 2023. Lectures will be scheduled for weekday evenings or Saturdays.

Aims
This course aims to introduce students to research methods and techniques in applied linguistics. Students will be trained to explore the common qualitative and quantitative methods used in applied linguistics and apply modern computer techniques to discovering language patterns and testing linguistic hypotheses.

Contents
The course covers the following topics:

  • Introduction to research methods
  • Analysing texts
  • Doing corpus-based research
  • Doing qualitative research
  • Doing quantitative research

Contact hours
Normally 3 hours per week.

Assessment
The continuous assessment component of the course accounts for 60% of the total course score, while the final examination accounts for the remaining 40% of the total course score. Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
