Aims

This course aims to explore the relationship between language and concepts of power and ideology in the linguistic practices of contemporary society through the critical discourse analysis approach. Students will study the ways in which language varies across different subject areas, social settings, communicative purposes, as well as the social roles and identities of the parties involved.

Contents

The course covers the following topics:

  • Fundamentals of critical discourse analysis
  • Institutional discourse
  • Political discourse
  • Discourse, gender and ethnicity

Learning Support

Two-hour lectures will be conducted face-to-face.

Assessment

There will be one quiz (30%), one assignment (30%) and a final examination (40%).

Online requirement

Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
