Aims

This course aims to offer an overview of applied linguistics as an academic discipline. It intends to discuss a range of enduring and emerging issues in the field, thereby raising students' awareness of various real-world language-driven problems and ways to address them.

Contents

The course covers primarily the following topics:

  • Introduction to applied linguistics
  • History and development of applied linguistics
  • Second language acquisition and teaching
  • Other essential topics in applied linguistics
  • Current trends and future directions

Learning support

Three-hour lectures will be conducted face-to-face.

Assessment

There are three components: presentation (10%), assignment (40%) and final examination (50%).

Online requirement

Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
