Aims

LANG 3329AED Semantics aims to outline basic concepts in semantics. This course also aims to provide linguistic tools to help you to understand the way in which meanings are expressed.

Contents

The course covers primarily the following topics:

  • Introduction to semantics
  • Word and word meaning
  • Tense, aspect, reference
  • Phrase, sentence, paragraph
  • Metaphorical expression

Learning support

Four two-hour tutorials and a supplementary lecture will be arranged.

Assessment

There are two assignments and a final examination.

Online requirement

Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
