Aims
This course aims to provide students with the means to analyse and evaluate current trends within the Asia-Pacific business community. It helps students to improve their ability to apply the current methods of analysing a complex business community, predicting future changes and assessing their likely impact. It reinforces students' articulation of the current methodologies, tools and techniques used to develop, implement and evaluate the effectiveness of business strategies.

The course also aims to extend the knowledge students gained in MGT B820 Strategy so that they can critically analyse and evaluate the strategic management issues in the Asia-Pacific region.

Contents
This course covers the following topics:

  • The global environment vs. regional environments
  • Environment and strategy: Actuality of the Asia-Pacific region
  • Primary, manufacturing and service sectors
  • The public sector, education and national security
  • Planning and selection of international business strategies
  • Strategy analysis: Understanding and interacting with global, regional and local environments
  • Strategy implementation and control
  • Culture and strategic management issues within the regional context
  • New players from emerging economics
  • Strategic corporate social responsibility
  • Contemporary strategic management issues in the region

Learning support
There will be seven two- to three-hour tutorials and one four-hour dayschool.

Assessment
There are three written assignments and one examination. Students must use word processing software (such as Microsoft Word) to prepare the assignments, and submit the assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
