Aims

This course aims to acquaint students with the current management trends in the Asia-Pacific region by applying relevant theories to analyse the business environment and develop appropriate strategies. It also aims to get students to critically examine strategic management issues by using examples from the Asia-Pacific regional context.

This course covers the following topics:

  • Business strategy: Key concepts, competitiveness and performance
  • Business strategy: Process & implementation
  • Business strategy in the Asia Pacific: Internal organisational environment & culture
  • Business strategy: External environment (industry & competition in the Asia-Pacific region)
  • Corporate-level strategy: Diversification strategies, mergers & acquisitions
  • Corporate-level strategy: Strategic alliances and business networks in the Asia Pacific
  • Regional/International strategy: Foreign entry strategies and selecting geographic locations in the Asia-Pacific region
  • Regional/International strategy: Asia-Pacific market multinationals and the role of governments
  • Regional/International strategy: Supply chain and sustainability
  • The “Asianisation” of innovation strategies: R&D and innovation as competitive advantage
  • Regional competitiveness and ethics in the Asia Pacific

Contact hours

A total of 45 contact hours across one term, including 11 three-hour lectures and four three-hour tutorial classes.

Assessment

Assessment for this course involves two assignments, class participation and an oral presentation (compulsory). The two assignments account for 70% of the total course score; class participation accounts for 10% and oral presentation accounts for the remaining 20%. Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
