Applicants for this course will be required to attend a selection interview.

Important note
Students admitted to the Master of Education (MED), Master of Education in English Language Education (MEDELE) or Master of Education in Drama and Language Education (MEDDLE) programmes in and before the 2022 Autumn Term MUST take the ENGL E810F course in the 2022 Autumn Term if they have not taken it before and if they intend to complete the course to fulfil the graduation requirement. The ENGL E810F course will be restructured after its last presentation in the 2022 Autumn Term and students will NOT be able to fulfil the graduation requirement of the three above-mentioned programmes if they take the restructured ENGL E810F course.

Aims
This course aims to develop English language teachers' knowledge and understanding of the English language, and their ability to apply this in their day-to-day teaching to enhance pupils' language standards.

Contents
The course covers the following topics:

  • Phonetics and phonology for English language teaching
  • Lexis, morphology and semantics for English language teaching
  • Pedagogic grammar
  • Written and spoken discourse for English language teaching
  • Sociolinguistics and English as an international language
  • Psycholinguistics and second language acquisition
  • Literature and language arts in English

Contact hours
Normally two/three 2-hour evening lectures per week and one 3-hour Sunday tutorial every two/three weeks.

Assessment
There are four assessment components:

  • Assignment 1 Essay (18%)
  • Assignment 2 Essay (18%)
  • Assignment 3 Project (24%)
  • Final examination (40%)

Except for some designated assignments, students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
