This middle-level course is required in several language-related programmes. It can also be counted towards the 'free choice credit' component of most other degree programmes. Successful students will receive a certificate in addition to their credits. Alternatively, students may choose to sit only the end-of-course examination, which is on a non-credit basis. Successful examination candidates will be awarded a certificate.

Students with no prior post-secondary education are advised to take ENGL E110 and ENGL E120 before taking this course.

Aims
This course aims to:

  • Develop students' English listening and speaking skills;
  • Enhance students' awareness of spoken language as it is used in social, study and work contexts.

Contents
The course covers the following topics:

  • Social communication — helping students gain competence and fluency in social situations
  • Academic communication — including discussion and seminar participation skills
  • Workplace communication — including reporting, negotiating and persuading in work-related contexts

Learning support
This course involves 150 study hours. There will be eight two-hour tutorials and one language laboratory class.

Assessment
There will be three assignments and a final examination. The assessment covers both listening and speaking skills. Except for some designated assignments, students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).

Equipment
Students will need access to multimedia components on the Online Learning Environment (OLE). This can be accessed via computers/mobile devices.
