Aims

This course aims to help students to define basic concepts in the study of language from a psychological perspective, understand the mechanisms and processes of language in relation to cognition and psychology, apply theories and models of psycholinguistics, and develop a critical perspective on the empirical studies in the field of psycholinguistics.

Contents

  • Foundations of psycholinguistics (biological basis of language; language and brain; linguistic principles and psychological mechanism; themes and controversies in modern psycholinguistics)
  • Research methods in psycholinguistics (behavioural methods; neurophysiological methods)
  • Language processing (speech comprehension; speech production; word processing; sentence processing; discourse processing)
  • Language development in different populations (language development in early childhood; the psycholinguistics of bilingualism; language processing in special populations)

Learning support

There will be four two-hour tutorials.

Assessment

  • Assignment 1: Short-answer questions (30%)
  • Assignment 2: Review of a research article in psycholinguistics (30%)
  • Assignment 3: A research project on a psycholinguistic topic (40%)

Online requirement

Except for some designated assignments, students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
