Aims

The course aims to help students to:

  • understand the major texts and genres in short stories produced by authors of different cultural, social and historical backgrounds;
  • recognise the features specific to short stories as well as those shared with prose fiction; and
  • apply various literary theories on their critical discussion of the short stories.

Contents

The course covers the following topics:

  • Introduction to short stories
  • 19th century realism
  • Modernism
  • Postcolonialism/Postmodernism

Learning support

Seven two-hour tutorials.

Assessment

There are two essay assignments (30% each) and a two-hour final exam (40%).

Except for some designated assignments, students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
