Aims

This course aims to equip students with linguistic knowledge and tools to explore and analyse English as it is currently used. It is designed to help students understand semantics and pragmatics, analyse structures that are larger than the sentence, and explore variations of English. Students intent on taking this course should note that this is not an English enhancement course; they are expected to have an adequate command of English.

Contents

The course covers primarily the following topics:

Semantics
Pragmatics
Discourse analysis
Language variation
Global Englishes

Learning support

Regular two-hour tutorials and a supplementary lecture will be arranged.

Assessment

There are three assignments and a final examination.

Online Requirement

Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
