Engineers in Society

ENGG S228 is an optional course in the BSc (Hons) in Communications Technology (with Management); BSc and BSc (Hons) in Computer Engineering; BSc and BSc (Hons) in Electronics; BSc (Hons) in Electronics (with Management); BSc and BSc (Hons) in Engineering Mechanics, Materials and Design; BSc (Hons) in Engineering Mechanics, Materials and Design (with Management); and BSc and BSc (Hons) in Product Design and Technology. It is also a general education course provided by the School of Science and Technology.

Students in the BSc (Hons) programmes intending to apply for membership in professional engineering societies are advised to take ENGG S228.

Aims
This course aims to:

• Introduce local engineers to the key economic and technology issues that affect the promotion and improvement of industrial activity in Hong Kong;

• Support the development of skills, knowledge and qualities that are important as a professional engineer in the global marketplace.

Contents
The course covers the following topics:

• An introduction to Hong Kong industry: Overview of the development of Hong Kong industry and its shift to a post-industrial society; Innovation and Technology Commission and related developments

• The engineer in society: The role of engineers in society and professional engineers in Hong Kong; global ethical issues for engineers

• Professional practice: Safety and health; environmental management intellectual property; design liability and consumer law

• An introduction to product engineering: The product development process; the role of IT in industry; quality management and its relevance to Hong Kong; product and technology life-cycle

• Engineering business development: Business issues for small technology-based start-up companies; development of a business plan and sources of finance in Hong Kong

Learning support
There will be regular tutorial and surgery sessions.

Assessment
There are two assignments and a final examination. Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).

Online requirement
This course is supported by the Online Learning Environment (OLE). You can find the latest course information from the OLE. Through the OLE, you can communicate electronically with your tutor and the Course Coordinator as well as other students. To assess the OLE, students will need to have access to the Internet. The use of the OLE is required for the study of this course.
