Learning support

In-person learning support consists of nine two-hour tutorials, one two-hour workshop and two two-hour supplementary lectures designed to complement the course materials and assist students in consolidating their learning for each unit.

Assessment

Course assessment includes continuous assessment (50%) and an end-of-course examination (50%). Continuous assessment will include three assignments (1,800 words each) and one project (2,500 words). Each assignment has a weighting of 15%, and the project has a weighting of 20%. The best two of the assignments (1-3) and the project will be counted towards the course score. Students must pass both the continuous assessment and examination in order to pass the course.

The types of assignments and the weighting of each are as follows:

Assignment 1: essay (15%)
Assignment 2: essay (15%)
Assignment 3: essay (15%)
Project: (20%)

The essays require students to interpret theories in teaching English as a second language in primary schools and explain how theories could be applied in classroom teaching. The project requires students to investigate an aspect of classroom teaching and learning. It typically involves some data collection and analysis, and may involve experimentation with task-based teaching approach or, alternatively, investigation into an aspect of learning or the resourcing of a teaching-learning initiative in their school context and to submit a reflective report on its implementation.

There will be one three-hour examination at the end of the course, in which students write short essays designed to assess their ability to explain, analyse and evaluate concepts and theories related to the learning and teaching of English as a second language in primary schools.

Online requirement

Students may be required to refer to the Online Learning Environment (OLE) and relevant websites. Except for some designated assignments, students are required to submit assignments via the OLE.
