Compulsory Prerequisite(s)

Completed at least 30 credit-units from the Electronics programme.

Aims

This course introduces students to research methods in educational technology and innovation, covering qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods. Students will learn to design, conduct, and evaluate research studies in educational technology contexts. The course emphasises the application of research methods to real-world educational technology problems, preparing students to conduct academic research.

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

  1. synthesise key concepts and principles of qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods research in educational technology contexts;
  2. critically evaluate research studies in educational technology and innovation for their methodological strengths and limitations;
  3. formulate research questions and hypotheses appropriate for investigating issues in educational technology;
  4. design a research study incorporating appropriate methods for data collection and analysis in educational technology settings; and
  5. construct a research proposal addressing a significant problem in educational technology or educational innovation.

Learning support

Students will learn through lectures and interactive tutorials. There will be 21 hours of lectures and 18 hours of tutorials. The course employs various teaching strategies, including lectures to introduce theoretical concepts and methodological approaches, hands-on tutorials to provide practical experience with research tools and software, case studies to analyse exemplary research in educational technology, group discussions to critique research articles and share insights, and individual consultations to guide students in developing their research proposals.

Assessment

The assessment in this course consists of two assignments (100%).

Online requirement

This course is supported by the Online Learning Environment (OLE). Students must access the OLE for course updates, communication with tutors and peers, and submission of assignments.

Equipment

A PC-compatible computer ready for connecting to the Internet is essential. The minimum configuration of the computer is:

  • PC with an x86 CPU or equivalent
  • 1GB RAM
  • Hard disk
  • Sound card with speakers

You need to be familiar with the basic use of a computer including keyboard, mouse and word processing software. Experience in using email, the Internet and the World Wide Web is also essential.

Software

You should have Windows with Microsoft Word. Other software will be downloaded from the Internet. You may need to use OpenOffice to prepare assignment answers.
