Aims

This is a 3-credit-unit postgraduate-level course. It is a core course of the Master of Arts in Creative Industries and Cultural Assets programme. The course will introduce students to a variety of contemporary art in Asia. Genres like painting, photography, sculpture, installation and media art will be discussed. Students will learn how to view contemporary art in Asia, its critical landscape, the socio-cultural background and how it integrates and transforms the art scene.

The course covers the following topics:

  • Introduction to art history
  • Art movements and appreciation
  • Asian art in global contexts
  • Contemporary art scene in East Asia
  • Contemporary art scene in South Asia
  • Contemporary art scene in Southeast Asia
  • Art exhibitions and networks in Asia
  • New trends and extended movement in Asia

Assessment

Course Assessment is based on students' performance in continuous assessment components, including (1) a class presentation, (2) an essay, and (3) an analytical paper and oral presentation. These components are worth 30%, 30% and 40% of the total marks for the course respectively. Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
