Aims

This course aims to acquaint students with a comprehensive understanding of the rationale for adopting corporate governance standards by applying relevant theories to the nature and purpose of those standards, the modes of implementing good corporate governance practices, the most important contemporary corporate governance issues globally and, in particular, those that relate to Hong Kong and China. It also aims to get students to examine the latest reforms and likely future development of corporate governance standards, including the growth of awareness and the importance of corporate social responsibility concepts by using examples from the international environment.

Contents

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • Explain the importance of corporate governance including the various responsibilities of different agents in corporate governance.
  • Assess the corporate governance rules and procedures in Hong Kong and China as compared to international practices and discuss certain corporate governance issues.
  • Appraise the development and implementation of enhanced corporate governance practices including the adoption of the wider concept of corporate social responsibility and higher standards of business ethics.

Learning support

There will be seven three-hour tutorials and one six-hour day school.

Assessment

There are two assignments and one examination. Students must use Microsoft Word to prepare the assignments and submit the assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).

Equipment

Students will need access to a personal computer with an Internet connection.

There are no set books for this course, but students will receive access to HKCGI online study material as part of the course.
