Important notes
This course will be taught via face-to-face mode. Lectures or tutorials will be scheduled on weekday evenings. There may be some field trips on Saturdays.

This is a five-credit course in the Master of Arts in Cultural and Heritage Tourism programme. It surveys the relationship between tourism and contemporary society from sociological and anthropological perspectives.

Aims
The course aims to investigate the key theories and concepts in the study of tourism as a global social phenomenon from sociological and anthropological perspectives. It examines the spiritual, socio-cultural, socio-psychological, political, politico-economic, and environmental aspects of contemporary tourism. Emphasis will be placed on integrating theory with empirical illustrations.

The course covers the following topics:

  • What is tourism? The historical development of tourism
  • Contemporary trends in tourism
  • Use of information technology in tourism
  • Tourism impacts
  • Tourism and sustainability
  • Tourism as sensual experience, and sex and tourism
  • Tourism and the sociology of consumption
  • Tourism and globalization

Contact hours
Normally three hours per week.

Assessment
There will be two assignments (60%) and an examination (40%). Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
