Aims

The course aims to equip students with a solid foundation of key knowledge, understanding and skills related to the internal functions and the external environment of businesses. It provides a comprehensive introduction to various business and management topics, including human resource management, finance, marketing, economics, and business ethics.

Contents

The course covers the following topics:

  • The nature of business, the external environment of business, and stakeholders
  • Human resource management
  • Accounting and finance
  • Marketing
  • The economic system and business–government relations
  • Business ethics and corporate social responsibility
  • Globalization and international business ethics

Learning support

There will be eight two-hour online lectures, four two-hour online surgeries, 28 one-hour online surgeries, and five six-hour compulsory face-to-face day schools. The dates for the compulsory face-to-face day schools are as follows:

Assessment

There are eight online lecture polls, three assignments, one oral presentation (compulsory assignment) and five application-based assessments conducted during compulsory face-to-face day schools. Assignments should be prepared with Microsoft Word, and submitted to Turnitin for plagiarism checking via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).

Equipment

Students will need access to a personal computer with an Internet connection.

Online study materials will be provided.

Remarks

This is a two-term course starting in the Spring Term and will end in the Summer Term.
