You are advised to have already completed SCI S102, SCI S112 or SCI S122.

Aims
This course aims to improve students’ ecological literacy by introducing the basic facts, principles and concepts of both fundamental and applied ecology using global and local examples. It helps students to acquire knowledge and technical skills by the application of molecular techniques to tackle ecological problems. Furthermore, this course can develop students' analytical and writing skills through (1) analyzing and interpreting ecological data, (2) conducing an independent ecological project and (3) writing a scientific report.

Contents
The course covers the following topics:

  • Biotic and abiotic interactions
  • Terrestrial and aquatic habitats
  • Population, community and ecosystems ecology
  • Humans and ecosystems
  • Industrial ecology
  • Molecular ecology
  • Practical skills in ecology

Learning support
The examples of learning support include face-to-face tutorials, surgeries, laboratory sessions, web links, CD-ROMs, video and/or field visits. Laboratory sessions or field visits may be held in the evenings of weekdays or in weekends.

Assessment
There will be assignments, a day school performance and a report, as well as a final examination. Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).

Equipment
Students will need access to a personal computer or other electronic devices with an Internet connection.
