Lectures will be scheduled on weekday evenings, Saturdays and Sundays.

Aims

The aim of this course is to provide students with an advance understanding of the principles of microbial pathogenesis and medical microbiology laboratory diagnostic testing. The teaching covers a wide range of topics including pathophysiology, therapy and epidemiology of infectious diseases. Through this course, the students are also expected to be equipped with advanced knowledge of laboratory diagnostic testing in the field of medical microbiology.

Contents

The course covers the following topics:

  • Pathogenesis of microbial infection
  • Epidemiology of infectious diseases
  • Emerging microbes and infections
  • Antimicrobial agents: Therapy and resistance
  • Advanced laboratory technologies in clinical microbiology

Assessment

Course assessment includes continuous assessment and a final examination. Continuous assessment includes a mid-term test and an oral presentation.

There is no textbook for the course. Major references will be used instead. Instructor will provide lecture notes and other necessary learning materials.
