Lectures will be scheduled on weekday evenings, Saturdays and Sundays.

Aims

This course aims to provide students with knowledge and principles in normal histology, general pathology and molecular pathology at the advanced level, and further train the students to master skills of routine laboratory procedures in histopathology, cytology laboratory, as well as organisations of their operations. Students are also provided with basic concepts and analysis tools in clinical bioinformatics in histopathology.

Contents

The course covers the following topics:

Topics 1. Cytopathology

a. Gynaecological cytology

b. Non-gynaecological cytology

c. FNA cytology

Topics 2. Reporting and quality assurance in cellular pathology

a. Histopathology reporting

b. Cytology reporting

c. Quality control and assurance in cellular pathology

d. Specimen dissection

Topics 3. Molecular biology in cellular pathology

a. Electron microscope

b. Molecular diagnosis method and practical skills in cellular pathology

c. Clinical bioinformatics

Assessment

Course assessment includes continuous assessment and a final examination. Continuous assessment includes assignments and case reports.

  • Continuous assessment
    • Written assignment(s)
      Students are required to submit written assignment(s). Written assignment(s) are used to assess students' learning on theoretical knowledge, allowing them to reflect and identify areas for improvement in studying this course.
    • Case report(s)
      Students are required to submit a case report. The case study will provide students with the opportunity to provide practice in applying knowledge.
  • Written examination
    The final examination will be a three-hour closed-book examination.

There is no textbook for the course. Major references will be used instead. Instructor will provide lecture notes and other necessary learning materials.
