Aims

This course aims to introduce students to concepts and theories related to the historical and contemporary spread of English, World Englishes and ELF (English as a lingua franca). Students will explore language features of native, second and foreign varieties of English around the world as well as the social and cultural issues arising from the global spread and localisation of English.

Contents

The course covers the following topics:

  • Basic concepts of World Englishes and English as a lingua franca
  • Variation in native Englishes
  • The 'new' Englishes
  • English in global contexts
  • The future of English as a global language

Learning support

Two-hour lectures will be conducted face-to-face.

Assessment

There are three assessment components: Assignment 1 Test (30%), Assignment 2 Essay (30%) and a final examination (40%).

Online Requirement

Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
