Aims

Students will be introduced to research tools and methods commonly used in applied linguistics, notably qualitative and quantitative research. They will also learn how to conduct corpus-based research. Special attention is paid to the various stages of the research process from the development and justification of research questions and the formulation of an appropriate research design, including methods of data-gathering and data analysis, to the final stage of writing up. The ultimate aim is to enable students to produce an original research paper at the end of the course.

Contents

The course covers the following topics:

  • Introduction to research methods
  • Analysing texts
  • Doing corpus-based research
  • Doing qualitative research
  • Doing quantitative research

Learning Support

Three-hour lectures will be conducted face-to-face.

Assessment

There will be one presentation (10%), two assignments (20%, 40%) and a final examination (30%).

Online requirement

Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
