ENVR 8051SEF Environmental Management and Regulations is a 6-credit-units postgraduate level course in the Master of Science in Global Environmental Management for Sustainable Development (MSCGEMSD) presented in face-to-face mode in English.

Aims

The course aims to develop in students an understanding of the fundamentals and goals of environmental management and regulation. It aims to provide students with the integrated knowledge and skills for practicing environmental management in contemporary society. It also helps students understand the development and current trends in environmental legislation with applications to environmental management systems.

Contents

The course covers the following topics:

  • Global, regional and local environmental issues in the contemporary world: From global warming to resources depletion
  • Environmental ethics and environmental education
  • Environmental management fundamentals and environmental management systems
  • Environmental legislation, regulation and management practices (focusing on the local context with reference to both global and local practices)
  • Case studies of environmental management and regulations

Assessment

The two individual written assignments include problem-solving, design and implementation, and/or essay-writing questions on principles of environmental management and regulations. The final examination, which is a group mini-project related to the case study of environmental management systems/regulations/practices, examines students' knowledge of factual information pertaining to course contents and emphasizes the demonstration of knowledge and problem-solving skills. The written report will be in essay format to assess students' understanding and evaluation of environmental management and regulations on local and global levels. Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
