Aims

The course aims to introduce contemporary theories and research methods of media and cultural studies to study creative economy and cultural policy and practices. Case studies and empirical evidence will show how to link cultural practices to concepts and theories of creativity, human capital, globalisation and localisation, which contribute to the growth of creative economy. Various cultural policy models and their impacts on specific sectors of the creative industries will be compared and contrasted in terms of the goals and roles of different government agencies, non-governmental organisations and private foundations. The course will enhance students' research and analytical ability for problem-solving in creative arts production and management in relation to the policy and global contexts.

Learning support

Teaching and learning strategies include lectures, seminar discussions and presentations. Students are expected to read all assigned readings and to conduct research for seminar sharing and presentation. Further readings are necessary for paper writing and project development to enhance students' research ability and critical analysis.

Assessment

Assessment is based on students' performance in Continuous Assessment including (1) class presentation, (2) term project and (3) research paper and oral presentation. Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
