    Prof. Wong Yuk-shan appointed next OUHK President  
 

Prof. Wong Yuk-shan will succeed Prof. John C Y Leong to be our fifth President in April 2014. The appointment has been approved by the Council today (20 June).

Prof. Wong is currently Vice President for Administration and Business and Professor of Life Science (Biology) at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He has served various institutions in teaching, research development and university administration, and has profound knowledge about higher education in Hong Kong. Having been a member of the OUHK Council between 2000 and 2006, he recognizes the importance of our mission.
 

 
   

  

 
         
    Community Healthcare Education Event Tomorrow  
   

A symposium entitled 'Community Care: Policy and Practice', organized by the Division of Nursing and Health Studies, will be held tomorrow (Friday) to address the current situation of the community healthcare services in Hong Kong from the perspectives of legislators, service providers, patients and education institutions. A five-year Community Healthcare Education Programme with the strong support from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, aiming at training community healthcare workers, will also be inaugurated on the same occasion. Admission is free. All are welcome.

    Admission Seminar for Full-time Programmes  
   

Full-time face-to-face programmes information sessions and advisory services on course selection will be held. Applications for full-time programmes will be accepted and admission interviews for some programmes will be arranged on-the-spot. HKDSE candidates, holders of HKALE, Associate Degree or Higher Diploma or equivalent qualifications are welcome.

    Diploma in Health Studies (Community Health Care)  
 

The programme aims to train community health workers to take care of the elderly, and people with chronic diseases or disability in the community. An entry scholarship scheme is available to award outstanding and financially needy students.
 

 
   

  

 
         
    Postgraduate Diploma / Postgraduate Certificate in Autism Spectrum Disorders  
 

To address the demand for professional services and thus further education about autism spectrum disorders, the School of Arts and Social Sciences and the Heep Hong Society jointly offer postgraduate programmes in Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). The programmes, commencing in September, aim at providing related professional workers, teachers and parents with more advanced and up-to-date knowledge of the theories, assessment methods and treatment techniques for ASD and related disorders.
 

 
   

  

 
         
    Master of Arts in Applied Translation  
 

Mixed with translation practicum and principle, the programme offers the experience from critical readings to different applications in the translation field, such as translation of literature, media, business and social sciences texts, which would enhance language ability and translation techniques.
 

 
   

  

 
         
    Testing and Certification programmes  
 

Testing and certification industry is one of the six economic areas where Hong Kong enjoys clear advantages and has good potential for further development. The Master of Science in Testing and Certification programme is designed for those who have obtained a Bachelor of Sciences or Bachelor of Engineering degree in a relevant discipline and are interested to embark on a career in the testing and certification industry. Non-HKDSE students can apply for the Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Testing and Certification programme via direct application.
 

 
   

  

 
         
    Master of Language Studies (Chinese Linguistics)  
 

This is designed mainly for Chinese language teachers who wish to have a higher degree in Chinese linguistics, or to meet the Education Bureau's (EDB) Subject Knowledge Requirement. The programme, providing various entry pathways for applicants, has been included in the EDB's list of 'recognized language major degree programmes'.

  Understanding Cancer  
   

American actress, Angelina Jolie, recently underwent a preventive double mastectomy after knowing that she has a mutant gene that increases her chance of developing breast cancer to 80%. Her decision has raised public awareness about cancer, which is also the top killer disease in Hong Kong. The disease has many possible causes and genetic factor is only one of them. In fact, exposure to carcinogens can also lead to cancers. The Open Learning Platform presents a free course material on Understanding Cancer (in Chinese) for you to learn more about the disease and stay away from potential carcinogens.

During the gatherings, the participants shared their learning and working experiences, as well as their views on the University's development, with representatives from the Schools.
