The Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK) is the only university in Hong Kong open to everyone aged 17 or above. Founded in 1989 by the Hong Kong Government with the name of the Open Learning Institute of Hong Kong, the University acquired its new title in May 1997. Since its beginning, more than 70,000 adult learners have seized the opportunity to benefit from its wide range of professional, business and other courses and programmes at sub-degree, degree and post-graduate levels designed to meet the challenges of tomorrow. Almost 4,000 of them have successfully achieved their goals and graduated with a recognized qualification, enhanced knowledge and skills. Looking ahead, more 2,000 students are expected to receive degrees each year. The first batch of some 4,200 students admitted to the October 1989 semester has now grown to more than 20,000 students. The number of programmes offered has expanded from five then, to more than 50 now. Students are of all ages and come from all walks of life. Most are working adults with full-time employment. They study multi-media distance-learning materials where and when they wish, and at a pace that suits individual needs. Every student is assigned a course tutor, and tutorials held in various locations around Hong Kong are mostly optional. Although no entry qualifications are required for most courses, the OUHK enforces rigorous quality-assurance mechanisms and tight control over exit standards. The learning community is served through four academic Schools: Arts and Social Sciences; Business and Administration; Education; and Science and Technology. Opportunities for self-improvement and career advancement are also supplied by the Centre for Continuing and Community Education. The OUHK moved to its new campus in April 1996. With improved facilities and firm foundations, the University has recently established a Centre for Research in Distance Learning and Adult Education, and has set its sights on being recognized as a regional Centre of Excellence in adult education and open learning.
