April 1996

The Institute moved to its permanent campus in Ho Man Tin.


June 1996

The 300-seat Bank of China Lecture Theatre was officially opened by Mr Yang Zi-lin (right), Chief Executive, Hong Kong-Macau Regional Office, Bank of China, and Mr Peter Wong Hong-yuen, Council Chairman.

For the first time, the Institute reached an agreement with a mainland institution, the Sichuan Union College of Vocational Education, to offer courses to students in the mainland.

October 1996

The new campus was officially opened on 31 October amid much fanfare and excitement in a grand ceremony attended by 250 local and overseas dignitaries and celebrities.

Several new programmes were launched with satisfactory enrolment. They are the Master of Education, the Bachelor of Arts in Language and Translation, three new science-cum-management Bachelor degrees and three Higher Diplomas in science.


November 1996


(Right) Mr Joseph W P Wong, Secretary for Education and Manpower, was the officiating guest at the Symposium.
To celebrate the campus opening, an International Symposium entitled 'Vision 21 - Paradigm Shifts in Tertiary Education in the 21st Century', which provided a forum for in-depth discussion of major economic and social developments influencing tertiary education worldwide, was held on 1 November.

The symposium was followed by two open days when over 10,000 members of the public visited the campus to familiarize themselves with the Institute.

Professor Danny Wong Shek-nam, formerly Dean of School of Business and Administration, was appointed Vice-President (Academic).

The Institute obtained a certificate of merit from the HKMA/ TVB Award for Marketing Excellence as a result of its excellent performance in marketing the MBA programme.


December 1996

1881 graduates were conferred degree, post-graduate and sub-degree awards at the Fourth Congregation. Sir John Swaine, Professor David J Murray and Dr Ian Mugridge received honorary doctoral degrees.

The Institute produced its first CD-ROM as study material for the course A History of Hong Kong 1842-1984 .


January 1997

The School of Arts and Social Sciences hosted an International Conference entitled 'Greater China: Problems, Prospects and Policies'.


February 1997

The 'library without walls' moves one step closer to reality following the signing of a consultancy contract between the OLI and the University of Science and Technology. On completion in 1998, the Electronic Library will have one of the largest electronic database in the region, offering a large number of concurrent users round-the-clock and off-campus services.

Internet services were provided for 1,000 students studying computer-related courses as a pilot project. In the long run, the OUHK plans to extend the service to all students.

The Executive Council approved in principle the upgrade of the Open Learning Institute to University.

The Alumni Association held its first general meeting and successfully recruited 300 members.
