Aims
This course emphasizes translation in the practical spectrum such as in the fields of business, media, etc. The course provides students with opportunities to analyse original texts and produce translation works of quality, and solve various kinds of problems encountered in the course of translation in different fields with appropriate linguistic and rhetorical strategies.

Contents
Two specialized fields will be covered in each presentation. An example of the topics to be taught is given below, assuming the specialized fields are media and business.

  • Subtitle translation: An introduction
  • The pragmatics of subtitle translation
  • Case 1: Comedy
  • Case 2: Romance
  • Case 3: Special topic (e.g. Documentary)
  • Business translation: An introduction
  • The principles of business translation
  • Case 1: Business proposals
  • Case 2: Business correspondences
  • Case 3: Tourism texts

Learning Support
Face-to-face teaching in the evening or weekends; 13 three-hour lectures, eight one-hour consultation sessions and two hours of tutorials spread out throughout the term.

Assessment
The course's assessment includes two assignments, a quiz and class participation. Details are as follows:

  • Assignment 1 (20%);
  • Assignment 2 (20%);
  • Class participation (20%); and
  • Quiz (40%)

Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
