ENVR S851F Environmental Management and Regulations is a 10-credit postgraduate level course in the Master of Science in Global Environmental Management for Sustainable Development (MSCGEMSD) presented in face-to-face mode in English.
Aims
The course aims to develop in students an understanding of the fundamentals and goals of environmental management and regulation. It aims to provide students with the integrated knowledge and skills for practising environmental management in contemporary society. It also helps students understand the development and current trends in environmental legislation with applications to environmental management systems.
Contents
The course covers the following topics:
Topic 1: Global, regional and local environmental issues in the contemporary world: From global warming to resources depletion
- Resources depletion
- Environmental pollutions (waste, air, water and noise)
- Global warming and climatic change
Topic 2: Environmental ethics and environmental education
- Principles of environmental ethics and environmental awareness
- Scope of environmental education
- Means of public environmental education
Topic 3: Environmental management fundamentals and environmental management systems
- Introduction of environmental management and basic principles
- Development of environmental management systems (EMS)
- Common elements, costs and benefits of an EMS
- ISO 14000 — context, models and practices
Topic 4: Environmental legislation, regulation and management practices (focusing on the local context with reference to both global and local practices)
- Environmental legislation and law and legislative process
- Environmental regulatory measures
- Common environmental management practices
Topic 5: Case studies of environmental management and regulations
- Local case study
- Global case study
Assessment
The two individual written assignments include problem-solving, design and implementation, and/or essay-writing questions on principles of environmental management and regulations. The final examination, which is a group mini-project related to the case study of environmental management systems/regulations/practices, examines students' knowledge of factual information pertaining to course contents and emphasizes the demonstration of knowledge and problem-solving skills. The written report will be in essay format to assess students' understanding and evaluation of environmental management and regulations on local and global levels. Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
