Aims
This course provides insights and understanding of the theoretical aspects of haematology and transfusion science for students enrolled in the Master of Applied Science in Medical Laboratory Science programme. This course enables students to comprehend the concepts of haematology and apply the haematological techniques for research and diagnosis in both haematology and transfusion science.
Contents
Topic 1. Basic haematology
Topic 2. Erythropoiesis, erythrocytes and haemoglobin
Topic 3. Leukocyte disorders
Topic 4. Haemostasis
Topic 5. Blood transfusion
Learning support
Three hours of lectures and one hour of tutorial sessions are adopted for each teaching week.
Assessment
Course assessment includes continuous assessment and a final examination. Overall Continuous Assessment Score (OCAS) includes written assignment, group project and a mid-term test.
Set book(s)
There is no textbook for the course. Major references will be used instead. Instructor will provide lecture notes and other necessary learning materials.
